The essentials every model should bring to the Test Shoot.

So what is a model test?

The main purpose of the model test is to emphasize the advantages of the model, to reveal her or his professional skills, to show the ability to stay in the frame. Therefore, nothing should distract attention from the model.

Today I want to talk about the essentials that every model should bring with her to the test shoot.

1. Shoes.

Unless I'm not your identical twin with the same body size, more likely I (or any other photographer) won't have shoes your size. Yes, sometimes we work with the stylist who provides the wardrobe. But most often, it is the model's responsibility to bring a variety of shoes for the test shoots. Good options here are heels (especially nude and black), flats, or sneakers.

2. Clothes.

As noted previously, sometimes the stylist on the set is not an option. So it is important to be prepared and have some alternatives in your apparel. In my opinion and experience go with the basics here. Simple T-shirts/crop tops/tank tops, jackets (preferably denim or leather, more than one preferred) and jeans/pants (one light, one dark, one fitted, one loose) are the best choices. The more you can bring the better. Preferably everything should be neutral colors with no graphics, logos, words of any kind.

3. Proper undergarments.

Ask your photographer or stylist if they require something special or a specific color. Nude is always a safe answer and is the “essential” color to have. I might add, nude undergarments are typically the ones you use most often than not.

4. Hair products: hairspray, Bobby pins, hair ties, etc.

You never know when a hairstylist or makeup artist will be a no show on the day of a shoot. Yes, this happens in the fashion world.

5. Jewelry.

Start collecting different jewelry, long earrings, studs, etc. Sometimes stylists or photographers forget their jewelry at a show or shoot. Sometimes stylists will ask you to provide your own. Lastly, earrings and jewelry always make an outfit pop in the shoot. Always ask your photographer first before wearing jewelry, see what his or her preference is, and allow them to choose the piece that matches best.

6. Business cards.

As your career advances, you will want to have your model business cards, comp cards, and portfolio in your model bag at all times. That way when someone important (like a designer, photographer, artist, news media member) asks for your information, you have a business card on hand. Nobody ever canceled networking.

7. Snacks and bottle(s) of water.

Take care of yourself by packing items you can eat. Water is a must!

8. Manicure and pedicure.

You will be surprised that I even mention this. But believe me, I know what I'm talking about. Nothing fancy just neat and clean fingers and toes. The nude polish will work just great.

9. Great attitude.

The most important one! I should say it's key to any kind of business. Don't be a diva, be polite and listen to what your photographer tells you. Teamwork is the dream work. Respect the people who came to the set for you. And share the positive vibes around.
